Jennifer Halchuk and Richard Lyle are the designers of MERCY.
Their separate design experiences create a dynamic base for a strong design aesthetic. Both studied apparel design at Ryerson Polytechnic University. While Richard began a label in London, Jennifer started MERCY in 1994. The two joined forces in 1996.
Mercy consistently breaks the rules of mass production by implementing surface techniques such as hand painting, silk screening, custom dyeing and freehand embroidery. Fabrics are always from natural fibers- silk, cotton, wool. These techniques are always organic and uncontrived. Annual research trips to France for fabric help to strengthen the European sensibility. Details are carefully chosen- pearl picture buttons from Italy, hand woven woolens from Scotland, painted and hammered military buttons, and especially the hand made brass label. The result is clothing with a vintage feel, a sentimental look: a soul.
Always seeing fashion in a larger context, Mercy has been a forerunner in their own independent presentations. They are the first designers in the industry to present collections without the use of models. Each collection was presented as an art installation, using hand cast wax forms, original film footage , sporting equipment, with original custom soundtracks.
MERCY clothing has been featured in NYLON, U.S. and Canada ELLE, I-D, Toronto Life Fashion, THE LOOK, The Toronto Star, The National Post, The Globe and Mail, TORO, Sportswear International, and GAP, GINZA, VISIO, and FUDGE magazines in Japan.
The clothing has also attracted attention from film and music industries.
Custom contracts include Hawksley Workman, The Cranberries, Courtney Love, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Alanis Morrisette, Molly Parker, Gina Gershon and Lorraine Bracco.
MERCY has worked extensively with MAC cosmetics, producing international line concepts and collections. For the 20th Anniversary of FASHION CARES, Mercy was 1 of only 4 design teams chosen to head the “BOLLYWOOD COWBOY” event on June 4, 2005. The event was covered by FT and Fashion File.
The unique MERCY style has been developed over 12 years. The quality of design and the clothes themselves have never been compromised. Great attention is paid to fabrics and high construction standards, ensuring that the clothing sustains the test of time. |
